NEWS RELEASE

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has begun a 90-day comment period on new floodplain information for Oconee County. An update of Base Flood Elevation (1-percent annual chance) has been finished, and the information is now available for public review. on the Preliminary Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) of your community. These proposed Base Flood Elevations are the basis for the floodplain management measures required for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). A community's failure to participate will result in:

  • The loss of flood insurance coverage
  • No federal grants or loans in identified flood hazard areas
  • Limited disaster insurance
  • No federally-backed  mortgages in identified flood hazard areas

In the event the new information indicates that you may need flood insurance, acting prior to the date FEMA designates the maps to be official can result in significant savings on premiums.

Copies of the new maps may be reviewed in Room 210 at the Pine Street Administrative Complex, 415 S. Pine Street, Walhalla, SC 29691. Appointments may be made with the County Floodplain Manager to review and discuss the changes, and the options available to he public. Contact Mark Washington, County Floodplain Manager, for more information.
