Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to serve on jury duty?
You must serve on jury duty unless: You are over 65 and choose not to serve; you have a doctors statement stating you have an illness: that will not allow you to serve; you have child under the age of 7 and do not work outside the home; school personnel including students may be transferred to a term that does not conflict with the school calendar year upon providing a statement from your school. The presiding Judge will address any other reason at the term. Under certain circumstances you may be transferred to another term.

How do I get a copy of my court records?
You may come to the office or write to us for certified copies of public records. There is a charge for these copies.

Has my child support been paid?
We do not answer any child support questions over the phone for security reasons. You may come to the office or write to us with any information or problems you may wish to address in regards to your child support. Checks are not hand delivered at counter.

I need a record check (criminal, civil or family).
Our office does not provide certification on criminal or civil searches of a general nature for employment. However, we will copy and certify any record you find in our indexes upon request in person or in writing. A fee will be charged.

Where do I record my deed, get a copy of my plat, or apply for a passport?
On July 1, 2000, Oconee County established a Register of Deeds Office.

Juror Information

Each year, the State Election Commission provides our county with a list of potential jurors. The names are collected from voter’s registration, drivers license and state issued identification cards. Jurors for each term are selected through random computers selection. Notices are mailed approximately 30 days in advance of the term.

Generous parking is available around the Courthouse free of any charge. Jurors report to the Main Courtroom.

Jurors are paid $15.00 per day for each day they appear at the Courthouse along with $ .31 per mile round trip. Statements of jury service are attached to the check at the end of the week. It is up to each employer whether they pay you while you are on jury duty. You will need to check with your employer to see what their policy is.

We have an answering machine available for jurors to call in to see when they are needed. The Judge for your term will give you instructions as to when to call. Unless, it is a special term your jury duty last for only one week.

Cell phones and pagers are not allowed in the Courtroom or in the Jury room.
