Ensure that all taxpayers are equally and fairly taxed in accordance with South Carolina regulations and assist Oconee County citizens in understanding property tax laws and their rights as provided under the law.

Our Responsibilities

The Auditor sets millage, as approved by Oconee County Council,  based upon the County’s assessed values as determined by local and state government market values and the budgetary needs of Oconee County and the School District of Oconee County. The Auditor assembles information that results in the levying of property taxes for real estate and personal property and generates tax notices that are collected by the Oconee County Treasurer. The Auditor’s Office processes personal property values and assessments (vehicles, boats, motors, airplanes, business personal property) based upon SC Department of Revenue guidelines. The office also processes Homestead Exemptions, as well as assists citizens with exemptions for other properties.

The Auditor

Kenneth (Ken) E. Nix, Oconee County Auditor was elected in November 2008 and is now in his second term of office. Ken is a graduate of Walhalla High School and holds a BA degree in Business from Central Wesleyan College. He comes to the county with over thirty years experience in management. He and his wife, Joan, of 45 years have two married children and two grandchildren, Sophie and Andrew. Ken and Joan reside in the Walhalla area.

Ken’s goal as Auditor is to assist citizens of Oconee County in making sure their property is classified properly in order that they receive the maximum benefit as provided by law.
